I recently was very disappointed when a well-known writers’ conference had the whistle blown on them (justifiably so) for deciding to not bring a staff member back for this year’s event due to her size. Weight or size discrimination occurs every day and it has happened to me.

There are many distinct reasons someone could be overweight-which is why the stereotypes are so aggravating.

We’re always eating.
Consider the TV sitcom in which the token fat person is always shoving their face and has no self-control. This is partly a lazy method of writing for a cheap laugh. But it’s a common stereotype and it’s annoying. And is it really all that funny?

We’re all lazy.
I’m busy from the minute my feet hit the ground in the morning until my head hits the pillow at night. I am aware of many other overweight people who are the identical way. Just because we’re not hanging out in the gym like it’s a hobby doesn’t mean we’re sitting on our butts eating candy all day.

We’re all sick because of our weight.

We are jealous of thin people.
Not long ago, someone at work (who happens to be lean ) made a huge point in talking to me to go on and on about how fat she thinks she’s getting. It’s very apparent that I am considerably heavier than her and she was speaking ONLY to me at the moment. This isn’t the first time I’ve had this sort of thing said to me.

When someone who is obviously quite thin says this to someone who is obviously thicker, the first thing that comes to mind is that they want you to say”Oh, I wish I was as thin as you! You aren’t fat in any way!” It is an obvious fish for a compliment.

Here is the thing, I do not care about who is thinner than me. I am not comparing myself to them!

All of us have low self esteem and feel awful about ourselves.
I’m currently almost at my highest weight (and I am aging), I feel better about myself than I ever have.

The only person I truly care about being drawn to me is my husband, and he is not complaining.

I once had a health coordinator where I work condescendingly tell me”you are worth it” as if she assumed that just because I was fat, I did not believe I needed to pursue whatever I felt was good for me.

We don’t know we’re fat.
I have had more than one person over my life feel the need to point out to me that I’m fat. We don’t need for people to make us aware of being overweight. We are perfectly capable of knowing this on our own, and believe me we understand it.

We do not know how to eliminate weight ourselves.
We don’t have to be enlightened with unsolicited advice as if we aren’t aware that you need to burn more calories than you eat in order to lose weight. We are not all totally helpless in this capacity and for lots of us, if want to lose weight bad enough, we’ll do it!

Nutritionists, personal trainers, coaches, etc., I am not at all saying they’re not valuable or important. What I mean is, we don’t need the”stink eye” if we have been indulge in seconds or possess a dessert.

I once had a coworker show me her sandwich, which had lots of vegetables on it, and say”Oh, look at that. Does not that look nice, vibrant, and delicious with all of those vegetables?” She said this to me like I was a child, like she was introducing the idea of eating veggies to me. I’m sure of her patronizing agenda because of other things she had said to me in the past.

Is it really that funny for so many silly, bumbling TV, book, and movie characters to be chubby? Do they so often have to be represented as simple-minded, adorable goofballs? We are not all stupid and uneducated, yet loveable idiots. Think of the chunky kid in the kid’s adventure movie who always has to be rescued or the portly cartoon mouse that is always lagging behind… you understand.

Some people are now very educated, successful professionals. We’re goal-oriented and have a lot to offer an organization with our well-developed careers.

There is a link to hygiene and obesity.
We also are no less inclined to look or dress professionally to present ourselves well. I once had a family member tell me about someone they believed seemed unhygienic (and happened to be obese ) by saying”I know fat smells…” My eyes about rolled out of my head.

We know this is a frequent stereotype or we would not see the slob character in a TV series or movie portrayed as fat. You’ve seen it-stains on their shirt, wrinkled clothes, general unkempt appearance.

That it’s anybody else’s business or that discrimination should be tolerated.
What I need to say about these creators of these stereotypes is this-if it will not affect you, then don’t judge. It is not really anyone else’s business what someone weighs or what size they wear. It is not OK to move your own low self-esteem toward a fat person so as to make yourself feel better.

Stereotypes and assumptions are harmful. This is where discrimination is born. This is the way we are passed over for promotions and chance. It is not OK to discriminate against someone for any reason, and size is not an exception.

There are various genres and subgenres of”zombie” movies. Some movies and TV series fall into categories like comedy or romance. Creative writers have no limits to what they could envision. When we think of”zombie” movies, we typically envision violence in addition to ugly creatures, but not all zombie films fall into this classification. There are some movies (and series) that aren’t quite as scary but that are worthwhile to be mentioned. The zombies in”Glitch” are rather likable, giving audiences the opportunity to feel empathy for them. In the French film”They Came Back” (2004), directed by Campillo, tens of thousands of people come back from the dead in hopes of reintegrating themselves into French culture, only to find out that it would not be not so easy. For anyone who prefers a captivating zombie story-line with likable characters, I’d suggest these three shows where great often triumphs over bad.

Films have been traditionally known to help viewers find enjoyment and relaxation at the end of the day. Horror films seem quite the contrary, even psychologically disturbing. Moreover, zombie movies are often grotesque, so it makes sense that people would be concerned about their friends who are admittedly addicted to zombie series. Perhaps viewers are more interested in the tribal team experience shared by a multicultural cast than they are interested in the horror. No doubt, people would rather experience the success of the good guys who strive to save their friends and loved ones.

Given that a real world of zombies would be impossible, viewers remain aware that a film journeys into the powers of imagination that never meet real life.

One common thread shared by all these zombie movies is the cast of literary protagonists who form their own teams with friends and others they meet along the way in order to survive. “Depressed” and”depression” are very common words in our daily conversations. A lot people have learned to use them rather than other, more accurate synonyms such as: sad, melancholic, disappointed, miserable, unhappy, downcast, gloomy, etc.. In fact, Merriam-Webster, the famous dictionary, defines”depressed” as feeling unhappiness. No wonder why so many men and women feel depressed! And from there to feeling ill and incapable to flourish, there is a very little step. Convince yourself of something, and that’s what you’ll have.

Many self-diagnosed depressions end up becoming true clinical depressions when in fact, they’re just life cubes, unsolved circumstances which make us feel hopeless, lost, tired and sad.

Clinical depressions have to follow very clear standards to be actual mental disorders. Some folks end up complying with those criteria because they find no solution to some dilemmas or situations in their own lives. Then they lose hope, feel trapped, consume their energy in never-ending loops of despair and worry until that becomes their daily life pattern. It’s not really a pathological reduction of strength and will but an unavoidable outcome when time goes by and a solution isn’t found.

A lot of these people don’t need a doctor. They’re not truly sick. They need help in finding new interpretations, new perspectives, new understandings that lead them to unexpected solutions to their problems. They want someone who can help them find new approaches and different avenues. At times, that is easier said than done, I understand, because the person’s acquired beliefs block them from viewing solutions which are clearly visible to people around them, but that doesn’t make them ill! That makes them blind or lost! In the past, a lot of those situations were solved with the help of elders and friends. Today, in a glowingly isolated society, where folks share less and dare not truly communicate, professionals are sought to provide suggestions and help. That, again, doesn’t make those lost people sick! By labeling them (or themselves) sick, the tag becomes a new burden to endure. They convince themselves that their problem is pathological and thus lose even more hope. Little by little, the absence of solutions, the burden of their label and their lack of hope really convince them that they are mentally sick. And consequently, they gradually become truly sick.

How can we then help ourselves and others to keep this from happening?

Let us start calling things by their real name! Let’s start allowing ourselves the freedom to express what we truly feel, rather than labeling our feelings with the general, ill-chosen and mostly erroneous term:”depressed.” Learn to use new terms and expressions and make the attempt to be clear and precise.
Let’s begin helping people around us express themselves, too. Each time a friend of loved one tells you they are depressed, ask them to clarify their feelings to you; ask them to be more precise so they can understand their own feelings better. That often gives them the chance to understand what’s causing those feelings and sensations, which often results in the new perspective they needed to guide them into finding a solution.
Ask for help. If you discover yourself (or know of someone in this scenario ) facing or experiencing a problem you can’t solve, do not wait for magical inspiration to offer you an unexpected solution. Search for Assistance. Ask your friends, your loved ones, or even a professional humanologist that will help you see new avenues and perspectives.

Do You Know Who is Really Your Friend?

Who would you refer to as your friends? Is it the individual who spends the most time with you? Or the person who’s always there in times of trouble? Is that a real good definition of a friend or just a construed significance of what a true friend ought to be?

We could look up the meaning in a dictionary, but anybody could do that. And that won’t change the answer you’ve got inside your own thoughts. What do you really feel a true friend is, what do you believe yourself a true friend to be.

Reason why I bring this up because, someone I once believed to be a great friend of mine when I actually paid close attention also, wasn’t a very good friend to me. My definition of a friend is somebody who has similar views and beliefs close to your own. Someone you can relate to and who you believe understands how you feel.

To further elaborate on this, a friend should be a give-and-take kind of relationship, and not solely giving or taking, but it has to be equal on both sides of the spectrum. Without this balance someone is being taken advantage of, where unfortunately a lot of mistake a friendship to be and believe that is how it ought to be.

Also a friend should be one to encourage and support a friend’s decision, if they understand and believe in their buddy’s choice. There’ll be times where friends will disagree, which is okay, everyone has the right to choose for themselves. However, to still believe in them, despite the fact that they don’t particular care for the cause, is what a friendship is about.

In my particular situation I had a friend, let’s name him Bob to secure his name here. Whom was going through some challenging times, his girlfriend at the time of 3 years wasn’t treating him like crap, little did I know he had been contributing too, but I felt bad for him and befriended him and helped him out. I let him stay with us and my family when he finally decided to leave her and stood up for him. I soon discovered how much of friend he was when he came in to live with us.

At first things seemed great, our arrangement was for him to get back on his feet and find a place of his own. I know he needed to recoup some funds out of his job prior to getting a place, and so I knew it might be a few months or so before he could make some substantial steps forward. A couple of months passed and it appeared as if nothing more had happened, he had been making himself at home, and not much progress on trying to move forward. Started making him pay rent to help matters speed along, and cover his expenses he’s accrued while in our home.

And this time, we were further from being connected than when we were not in the same household. Come to find out he’s been spending his time constructing another relationship after he emerged from the one he’s been in. Wanted the best for him, but advised it may not be the perfect time to start starting another relationship.

So fast forward, and now Bob and his new girlfriend were living with us!!! I don’t understand how it came about, but it did. When you believe you are friends you’re sometimes blinded for their manipulated ways. Though it was brief before they got their own place together it still happened.

To bring you to the present, Bob and his new girl, who I’ll call Bertha, awakened, and took all of his stuff. Even though I warned him about the relationship to start with, I still was there for him. Now to back track a bit I got involved with my own business and brought him along too, because I knew it could help him as it has helped us.

Now I know that it seems as if I have drifted far from class here on whom our real friends are, but this example explains more than any words I could write, through personal experience. At the moment I realized he wasn’t my friend, because he didn’t support me, but more importantly he did not believe he would ever escape the 9 to 5 rat race they most people believe is the only alternative. I didn’t realize how much of a friend he was not until I myself began to grow personally.

I say all this to say, our friends are the ones who beliefs amounts match up, and they aren’t constantly taking, but giving and sharing. One who believes in you for better, and has attained it their selves, and gives you advice to be successful too. One that can help you understand your full potential and allow you to understand you can have all you would like.

Churches Are Failing Their Pastors

Please forgive me, but I can’t undo my past. Almost 20 years I spent in the field of industrial relations, brokering peace between employees and managers through my role as a health and safety professional. My job was to advocate for the person who was bullied, to investigate incidents for the truth, and to understand and improve the systems and procedures that supported a safe workplace.

Whilst the cultures in these workplaces were not perfect, they were certainly workplaces, for the most part, that honored and backed their workers. I’d have had a great deal of trouble staying with an organisation which couldn’t respect and back their workers. The caveat here is that I have heard plenty of horror stories, and noticed a few, but it was not my experience for the larger part. The companies I worked for always seemed to be striving for excellence in the ideal way.

When I contrast the church workplace with the secular office, through all of what I read and know from experience, it still amazes me how woefully struggling pastors could be treated.

When people are under their best they perform at below their best.

All of us perform poorly at some stage.

Where is the support so we can rise back to our very best?

Pastors are people too.

The church could learn a lot from the way that high-reliability organisations operate. For starters, they endeavor to get a Just Culture. That their heartbeat is the mantra’culture eats strategy for breakfast.’ Culture is everything because everything is consumed civilization. And, yes, churches also have their own culture, a kind of DNA that epitomizes the way they operate.

It’s commonplace industrially for employees to have the security of an Employee Assistance Program. This entitles the employee and their family members to completely confidential psychological support and counselling. I know that policies suggest that there are, by a standard, 3 to 6 visits made. But I know the truth in businesses having an employee-friendly culture. They do not place such a limit where there’s the requirement for more support.

In actuality, my experience with the organisations I have worked for is that they will do anything reasonably practicable to support an ailing worker. And any employee who had a really honest relationship with their employer could negotiate anything, since the employer truly wanted the best for the employee.

Now I know that a few churches, and likely many, would assist their pastors and paid ministry employees to this degree; into the actual degree of having faith within the relationship that neither will be screwed.

I guess, however, there’s a chance that some churches do not, or won’t, or can’t, assist their pastors and paid ministry employees to this degree. A few of the reasons might be quite practical. Sometimes it is exactly what it is, and we can not do anything about it. But I really do wonder if more can not be done to check in on pastors and paid ministry workers, regarding their health and well-being, to understand their issues, and also to give them redress into counselling and other types of support.

If we can allow an employee in the secular workplace to take time off or to make other reasonable adjustments to their job, or to give them counseling support, and to be on the front foot in checking in on them, to see how they are going, why can’t we do this in the church to our pastors?

If we can understand when an employee in the secular workplace is stressed, or who is bound up in battle, or they’re unhappy or upset for any logical reason, why can not we extend this to the church workplace?

If bullying and harassment and mistreatment can occur in the secular workplace, it may happen in the church office. I’ve seen mediation in both workplace settings, and the church, from my experience, has a great deal to learn. When there is an issue that needs mediation, so all parties are encouraged, surely it is incumbent on secular management or church leadership (whatever the circumstance is) to organize a genuinely independent and proficient individual or staff to do it. So root causes of conflicts could be established and balancing brokered.

Can churches not see that the working environment for pastors is hazardous?

It is exemplary leadership when churches devote to protecting their people in such a hazardous environment.

I think there is an chance for the church to understand it’s an industrial relations environment, and have systems and policies and procedures to deal with a selection of issues, so that pastors feel adequately supported, and churches can feel protected.

I find it is reprehensible that a typical employee might get full and fair support from their employer, and they should, (and I know that many still do not) yet churches aren’t willing, in many circumstances, to support their pastors to the same kind of degree.
